Before the birth of Disney+, Marvel Cinematic Universe was still known for its series on Netflix. In this streaming platform, the MCU’s series are known for their dark and gritting tone but their reputations are great. Among those Netflix shows is Daredevil.
Daredevil. Three seasons. Kingpin as its menacing villain. And Charlie Cox as the magnificent actor who successfully portrayed the titular character. This series is absolutely loved and cherished by Marvel fans.
However, with the birth of Disney+, the colossal company wants its product, Daredevil, to be on their own streaming service. Their plan is to remove Daredevil from Netflix and make a new show on their own.
Disney+ will rebrand ‘Daredevil’ as ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, with a whopping 18 episodes. And yet, as reported by Collider, the show is scrapped entirely in the middle of the progress as Disney is not happy with the show’s direction.
This news might upset Daredevil fans as this will inevitably postpone the release date of the series. However, let us convince you that this is actually good news.
This isn’t actually the first Disney+ show to have creative differences among the writers and executives. However, unlike ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, most of Disney+ shows are ‘fixed’ by doing reshoots and changing their directors and writers. This causes most of Disney+ shows to seem choppy.
The highly-anticipated Disney shows, mainly from Marvel and Star Wars franchise, are always facing the same situation: the titular characters don’t have the spotlight in their own shows, every show seems like an ad for future projects, and lack of impactful character developments.
But why do Disney always fix their shows by patching them with reshoots and replacing their writers? The most probable answer is that Disney doesn’t want to waste any time. They are aiming at pumping two to three high-budget series per year. In order to achieve that target, Disney tends to skip even the most basic steps of making a series such as shooting a pilot episode, preparing a show bible, and planning a multi-seasonal strategy storyline. They are too focused on quantity, not quality.
Luckily for us, Disney realizes that their quantity-over-quality is not working really well. Their recent tv shows have been receiving poor critical reception like, Secret Invasion, She-Hulk, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Disney can’t afford to fail at a Daredevil show too. Afterall, he is one of the most beloved characters of Marvel. This is why Disney thinks it’s best to completely overhaul the show and start from scratch to ensure its quality, other than to patch the show with reshoots.
Sure, the release date of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ will be postponed but it is always better to wait for a show with more strategic planning and direction. This proves that Disney is learning from their mistake in ensuring the quality of a show.
Remember Obi-Wan Kenobi? A fan-favorite Star Wars character that everyone loves. The fans have been waiting two decades for his own show only to get disappointed when it actually releases.
