In the futuristic world of Ejen Ali, the city of Cyberaya is portrayed as a symbol of technological advancement that stretches the imagination. Interestingly, Cyberaya is actually inspired by Cyberjaya, a real-life digital economic hub in Malaysia founded to drive innovation in the science and technology industries.
Grounded and Realistic
The Ejen Ali TV series and movies depict Cyberaya as a smart city of the future, functioning as a centre for the development and research of cutting-edge technology. Cyberaya’s technological ecosystem is supported by three key pillars, each led by a prominent scientist in their respective fields. Dr. Tong is a biotechnology expert, Dr. Mala specialises in energy engineering, and Ejen Ali’s father, Dr. Ghazali, is a computer science genius. It’s no surprise then that Ali’s talent in Techno core stems from the influence of Dr. Ghazali and his wife, Ejen Aliya — the creator of the IRIS device.

Unlike many fictional worlds that focus on supernatural powers or mysticism, Ejen Ali and Cyberaya take a more grounded, realistic approach. Science, technology, and skills refined through rigorous training form the foundation of the strength behind MATA’s agents. These elite agents do not possess innate superpowers — instead, their abilities are enhanced through advanced gadgets and tech innovations developed within the city. The device designs are creatively inspired by traditional toys and weapons from the Malay Archipelago and across Asia, such as:
- Yo-Sing, Ali’s magnetic weapon, which combines a spinning top and a yo-yo.
- General Rama’s mace, inspired by the martial art of kalaripayattu.
- Plasma kerambit, used by Agent Rizka.
This approach makes Cyberaya a reflection of real-world human potential fueled by innovation, enriched with multicultural elements from Malaysia.

An added layer of fiction in the Ejen Ali universe is Azurium, a rare and powerful mineral that serves as city’s main energy source. Due to its immense power, Azurium is restricted to high-tech applications to ensure public safety. However, Cyberaya’s new leadership plans to expand its global use under the guise of progress — a decision that could spark major global security risks.
Because of its advanced technology, Cyberaya has become a target for greedy and malicious factions. These threats come from both known and hidden sources, some of which are deliberately kept secret by Cyberaya’s founder, Dato’ Othman, to avoid public panic. As such, maintaining security and hidden defense systems has become a top priority to preserve the city’s stability.
Dealing With Threats Against Cyberaya
To deal with these threats, a covert intelligence agency known as MATA was established. Operating from behind the scenes in the city, MATA’s mission is to protect civilians from high-tech weaponry, dangerous experiments, and cybercrimes. MATA agents are trained across four key disciplines, or Cores:
- NEURO – Strategy
- TEKNO – Technology
- KOMBAT – Combat
- INVISO – Stealth & Infiltration

Ultimately, Cyberaya is more than just a setting in the Ejen Ali series — it represents the conflict between technological progress and social responsibility that parallels real life. It symbolizes a hopeful vision of the future, while also warning of the dangers when power falls into the wrong hands. Inspired by Malaysia’s Cyberjaya, the series delivers a meaningful message that resonates with our modern reality.
