Don’t Starve: A Test of Resilience

If you enjoy challenging games, then this roguelike game by Klei Entertainment called Don’t Starve would be the perfect game for you. I would describe the game as ‘camping without touching grass where almost everything will try to kill you’.

This game will test your ability to adapt and survive in the ultimate harsh environment without taking one step outside.

About The Game

For those that don’t know, roguelike games are dungeon-crawling games where you start in a randomised dungeon but all of the progression will reset at the end of every run and have a permanent death.

In Don’t Starve, you play the game as one of the characters and enter a randomly generated world. Then you are required to gather resources, craft items, build your camp and fight against the various mobs available.

As in the name, Don’t Starve has hunger mechanics alongside health and sanity. Aside from maintaining those three, you need to make sure that you stay in the light as the darkness will hurt you.

If you end up dead, you have to start everything all over again from scratch.

The Environment

The world of Don’t Starve would provide you with everything you need to survive. Every material collected would often be useful to craft something to increase your survivability. Crafting materials should be available in the different biomes that the world has to offer.

Each biome also contains different types of creatures that reside there. There are three types of creatures: hostile, neutral and passive. All creatures may drop materials or food items that can be cooked and eaten.

Seasons also play a role in this game where it could affect your character in various ways. Autumn, the season we start with, is the nicest as the weather doesn’t affect the player. However, winter will freeze you. Some bosses might even appear during specific seasons.

For you to survive the harsh world, you can only brace yourself with your chosen character and their abilities.

The Playable Characters

For your first run, you can only play as Wagstaff or Wilson as they are considered the protagonist and the main focus of the game’s storyline, which can be triggered by entering Adventure Mode.

Wilson is good for new players because his skill is beard growth which works as an insulator that keeps you warm and once shaved, it becomes a material used for crafting. After surviving for a certain duration, you would unlock a few new characters to try.

Wendy is another character that is recommended for a new player to use since her ability is helpful and easier to handle. Wendy can’t take a lot of damage without proper gear but she has a ghost sister, Abigail, who can be summoned to fight and protect her.

Once you feel like you can take on more challenges, you can start exploring other characters. Every character has certain abilities and/or limitations which will either increase the difficulty or assist you in your run. The base game has 10 characters including the ones mentioned for you to choose from.

There are 3 additional downloadable contents that you can buy which would add things to the base game such as enemies, seasons and even characters. I could go on and on about what the game could offer you but honestly, it’s a game you should try to see if you like it.

So, can you survive long enough in this game?
