Fantastic Four vs Their Greatest Foe: Expectation

During Valentine’s Day, Marvel spared us some love by announcing the cast of the new Fantastic Four movie, in an amazing poster with a 60’s aesthetic. Though this is great news for fans, our new superhero team will be up against their greatest foe yet: Expectation.

Casting has been the topic of discussion among the fans. Prior to the announcement, fans had done their own ‘fan-cast’. Zac Efron as the Human Torch, Emily Blunt as the Invisible Woman, and John Krasinski as the Mister Fantastic. Although it is interesting to see John Krasinski play Mister Fantastic in a brief moment during a Doctor Strange movie, Pedro Pascal has been cast as the main counterpart of the MCU version.

Marvel’s decision to cast Pedro Pascal has been criticized. There is absolutely no doubt that Pedro is a talented actor, but people have been expressing their concern if he’s ability to pull off the genius superhero look. Additionally, with his age approaching his 50s, fans are concerned if he’s able to hold on to that role for a long time in the MCU.

Reputation

We don’t talk about the 2015 reboot

Although Fantastic Four is such an iconic brand in the comic industry, their movies have never been able to live up to people’s expectations. Most people dislike ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’ and everyone hates the 2015 rebooted movie.

Marvel holds a huge burden to make it right this time if they don’t want a Fantastic Four movie to fail a third time in a row.

Timeline

It remains uncertain whether the movie will take place in the main continuity of the MCU or whether Marvel will pull yet another multiverse card for this movie.

Based on the poster and logo, it appears that the event of this movie will take place in the 60’s. If that’s the case, then Marvel has a huge burden explaining why the team has never been mentioned in the other MCU movies.

But if Marvel decided to pull another multiverse card by saying the event of this movie takes place in a separated universe, then Marvel would have difficulties to have them interact with other MCU heroes. This is because Marvel has already established the deadly consequences of multiversal interactions such as ‘TVA interjections’ in Loki series, ‘Incursions’ in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and ‘the break of Canon Events’ in the Spider-verse movies.

The Villain

It has been heavily rumoured that the main villain of the new movie will be Galactus. Galactus is a great Fantastic Four villain. He is a giant being that eats planets to survive. Because of his popularity, this character will have lots of expectations.

And, if you forget… Earth is actually a cocoon for a space alien god called Tiamut. Let’s not forget that he’s literally protruding from the Earth’s core since 2021. That issue is still unresolved and it would be redundant for Marvel to do yet another plot ‘involving a giant space monster that will destroy Earth to survive’.

Conclusion

Let’s hope for the best

In summary, Marvel’s announcement of the new Fantastic Four movie brings both excitement and concern. With casting controversies, past disappointments, and narrative complexities, the studio faces the daunting task of meeting fan expectations. As they navigate these challenges and strive to revitalize the beloved superhero team, the success of the upcoming film rests on Marvel’s ability to deliver a fresh and captivating take on the iconic characters while staying true to their comic book roots.
