Fights, Camera, Action!: Reviewing ‘The Fall Guy’

Still departing from his usual brooding characters, Ryan Gosling is back with yet another fun movie. Also directed by David Leitch, who helmed Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train, The Fall Guy’s success seems inevitable. Or is it?

Heroes Behind The Scene

The forgotten heroes

Let’s establish a fact here: The Fall Guy is definitely a movie to fall for. If you watched the trailer, thinking that this should be a fun movie where you could just sit down, shut your brains off for a moment, and have some good laughs. Upon watching the movie, you’ll realize that it’s more than that. It’s a love letter from the stunt crews. And that makes sense because the director himself, David Leitch, was a stuntman.

It brilliantly encapsulates the reality of being a stuntman as a career. How they risk their lives for their job. And it is fair to say that there are tons of jobs out there that require lots of risky gigs. Police, firefighters, soldiers, etc. However, for stuntmen, they tend to be forgotten and overshadowed by the big stars.

And when accidents happen to them, they could lose their job, being unnoticed, disregarded… and having no penchant (if we’re still comparing the job with police and firefighters).

With that said, the action sequences in this movie are amazing and brilliantly done. We’re talking about both fighting choreographies and the humor–a perfect embodiment of ‘action-comedy’.

Creatively Done Story

xStunts and action are not the only things that made this movie special. The story, particularly the bad guys’ plan, is brilliant too. At the beginning of the movie, you might be thinking that this movie’s jokes are so random and out of place. However, as you get near the end of the movie, you’ll realize that everything makes sense. All this time, they have been giving you clues and foreshadowing elements. If you watched Bullet Train, you’ll relive that experience.

Almost A Rom-Com

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s undeniable chemistry

The romantic element in this movie deserves the spotlight. With its ’80s vibe, the romantic subplot is so cheesy and corny but it still works. In fact, calling it a ‘romantic subplot’ is an understatement because this movie feels more like a romantic comedy than an action comedy.

A Love Letter From the Stunt Crews

The final act of ‘The Fall Guy’

Remember when we said the movie is a love letter from stunt crews? The final act of the movie strengthens it. They literally have the final battle involving stunt crews against the bad guys à la Wakanda style. They even fight them with stunt gears and filmmaking equipment like safety ropes, vehicle rig cameras, pyro effects, and crash pads. It has the same vibe as the final act of Big Fat Liar, but expect the action, adrenaline, and fun up to eleven.

Conclusion
