Directed, written, produced, and starred by the same person, this movie is clearly a passion project of Dev Patel. Being in charge of almost everything, did Dev Patel nailed his directorial debut? Let’s find out.

At a first glance, Monkey Man uses a classic action story formula–a guy taking down a cartel to avenge his loved ones. But Dev Patel manages to apply the formula, and dial it up to eleven.

The revenge motivation of our main character, Bobby, was strongly established. What the corrupted policeman, Rana, did to his mother was malignant and straight up disturbing. And it makes us root for Bobby straight away, regardless of his brutality. Because the bad guys in Monkey Man have absolutely no redeeming qualities.

This movie is NOT ‘monkeying’ around

And the way he strategized his revenge plot was pretty smart too. He did not immediately punch his way out to the criminal organization. Instead, he carefully plans his way into the Kings, a luxurious brothel. Getting a job there, befriending an important guy for promotion, and even training a stray dog to carry a gun!

The bad guys shouldn’t have ‘gibbon’ him a second chance

It takes some time before the action starts in the movie. But when it starts, it does not stop. Brutal fist fight at the washroom, escape from the brothel, a chase scene in a tuk tuk, running on foot from police, and battling a pimp with an axe! All of it happens in a fast-paced action sequence. And it is absolutely necessary to mention how the music blends well with the action sequences. Dev Patel manages to utilize dance phonk, electropop, death metal, and serene music to fit the action context of the scenes.

The music made the action sequences go ‘bananas’

This movie is more than just a mindless action sequence. It carefully depicts the social issues in India–corruption, discrimination, caste systems, oppression, and more. And most audiences from all over the world can relate to it too. Because let’s be honest, corruption is not a problem exclusive to India. It happens all around the world and ruins our society. Bravo to Dev Patel for bringing that up.

Literally made of blood, sweat, and tears

Dev Patel faced tons of challenges while working on this movie. He broke many bones and even tore his muscles while shooting. He even faced financial problems that he had to shoot some scenes with his iPhone. With that said, Dev Patel should not only be praised for his creativity, but also for his determination and resilience in producing this movie.

Please don’t call this movie the ‘Indian John Wick’. It’s its own thing!

Overall, this movie is great. Action packed, beautiful cinematography, satisfying revenge story, and it depicts social problems in the world. With that, I believe that this movie deserved to be ranked 9 out of 10.
