Samsung Unbox and Discover 2024: Upscaling and Smart Hub

The live event Samsung Malaysia premiered on YouTube on 27th March 2024 has introduced us to three new product lineups: Samsung NEO QLED, NEO QLED 8K, and Samsung OLED — three new smart televisions that can act as a hub to the living space of the users, thanks to the feature called “Smart Things” introduced by Samsung. The products will also be using operating on Samsung Tizen OS: a Linux-based operating system that integrates well with the Smart Hub application on Samsung devices.

If anything, I’d like to believe Samsung is catching up to Apple in terms of ecosystem.

SW Yong, the corporate president of Samsung Electronics, has mentioned several new features by the new product lineups, including the Smart Hub integration with all Samsung devices, smart A.I. upscaling for improved image quality, Samsung Knox for security measures as well as smart audio modes to improve overall experience.

I’ll be covering all three products lineups and some other things they have covered by the respective members of Samsung throughout the premiered event.

Samsung NEO QLED 8K: Pushing the Limits of Resolution

A.I. upscaling is the big key point of these product lineups. With the new Neural Quantum 8 (NQ8) A.I. Gen 3 processor, the television is said to be 8x more powerful than the previous generation with faster data processing and lower power consumption. It focuses on three different aspects of a smart television: A.I. sound, A.I. picture, and A.I. optimisation that span across all product lineups, which are pretty much self-explanatory.

The Samsung NEO QLED 8K lineups shown in the premiere are to be the crown jewel of Samsung’s TV offerings. The unparalleled sharpness and clarity allow even the most fanatic gamers or cinephiles to enjoy the immersive visual experience possible.

The smart television also boasts a feature called “AI motion enhancer pro”, which helps with identifying and improving the image quality of moving objects. Things like cars, people jogging, footballs, and even the smallest tennis ball was shown to be excellently analysed and enhanced to make them look sharp and clear to the eye.

It’s also shown in the premiered event that the upscaling capabilities of the smart televisions are able to enhance old movies and TV shows to match the 8K/4K resolution of the television. We’ve seen video games adopting the A.I. upscaling technology before, but never to this extent.

If truly this upscaling technology they have been boasting about is applicable to everything, then we might have just the chance to view our old footage decades ago in far more detail and sharpness, as if they were taken in recent years.

There’s also something else called “Real-depth Enhancer Pro” that helps identifying and isolating subjects from the background that basically improves visual experience (as if you’re watching a 3D cinema of some sort), and Active Voice Amplifier Pro that adjusts audio levels accordingly (adapting to scenes like actions, music, gaming, and background noises from your surroundings like vacuum noise). That, together with a feature called OTS Pro the Samsung NEO QLED 8K boasts that tracks where the sound travels, there’s no pulling you away from the immersive experience.

Samsung NEO QLED 8K models are based on Infinity Air Design (in other words, non-bezel display) so you can prop the TVs on a shelf, or a table surface, against the wall and they would look pleasing to the eye without borders ruining the aesthetic look of your room.

Samsung NEO QLED: Best of Both Worlds

The NEO QLED line could be ideal for users seeking a powerful TV with cutting-edge features at a potentially more accessible price point compared to the top-of-the-line 8K models.

The models feature a Neural Quantum 4 (NQ4) A.I. Gen 2 processor (instead of the NQ8 A.I. Gen 3 on the 8K model). It boasts similar features the 8K models have, including the 3D real-depth processing and the Infinity Air Design. Samsung NEO QLED offers a number of models: 80D, 85D, 90D, and 95D (each with respective screen size), with each flaunting a 4K display, so you’re not missing out on the extra sharpness and clarity of recent television displays (unless you owned 8K televisions before).

The models also feature Quantum Matrix Technology that helps with tricky lighting. Sometimes in bright light, or when the sun is shining directly on the television in the living room, it can get difficult to see whatever is on the display, ruining the immersion. So the feature negates that, and you won’t be needing to worry about glares on the screen any longer.

Speaking of display, all of the models are PANTONE certified, making the first television models in the market to have certification for colour accuracy and life-like colour spectrum — a niche that is always known in Samsung displays, whether on smartphones, tablets, or televisions.

Samsung OLED: Best Bang for Your Buck

Samsung OLED (image credit: Samsung).

The introduction of an OLED lineup marks a significant shift for Samsung. OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology offers inherent advantages in contrast: each pixel can turn on and off independently, resulting in perfect blacks and near-infinite contrast ratios. This translates into incredibly lifelike images with deep blacks and a wider viewing angle compared to traditional LED TVs.

Samsung OLED TVs use the same processor as the NEO QLED (NQ4 A.I. Gen 2 processor), so the data processing and power consumption would be up to par with its 4K variants.

The models have three different designs to choose from: the Infinity One design, Laser-Slim design, and Contour design — all which are available to all but the 80D models.

The Samsung OLED would be ideal if you’re just looking for a replacement for your old television in exchange for a new one, packed with all the smart features offered by Samsung TVs. With that said, this smart TV also adopts Samsung Tizen OS, which means all the integration between devices would work just as well with it.

The Smart Hub and Other Features on Samsung Tizen OS

Benefits of Samsung TV (screenshot credit: Samsung).

One thing seems certain: all three of these TV lineups are likely to integrate seamlessly with Samsung’s Smart Hub. This user-friendly interface acts as a central hub for accessing streaming services, gaming platforms, and other smart TV features. Samsung’s Tizen OS, known for its intuitive design and smooth performance, powers the Smart Hub, offering voice control and integration with other Samsung smart home devices through Samsung SmartThings.

With SmartThings, you can practically use the TV as your personal ‘Jarvis’; it connects to every Samsung device you own: your washing machine, your fridge, your smartwatches and smartphones, lights, and security cameras installed around your home. Also, the Health tab in Samsung Tizen OS allows you to connect with your personal doctors through teleconference, as well as ConnecTime to launch a virtual meeting with your friends and families, all from the Samsung NEO QLED or OLED variants.

These smart TVs are also open to customisability — you can adjust widgets for a quick glance whenever you pass by them or when you need to catch up on things before you get the day started. Speaking of customisability, you can set and personalise wallpapers to your liking as well.

Samsung Tizen OS is secured by Samsung Knox to ensure users’ privacy and security. Knox ensures the TV boots up using only verified software and protects the core Tizen OS kernel from unauthorized modifications. This helps prevent malware from infecting the system. Data encryption by Samsung Knox also ensures your personal information stored on the TV remains confidential, so the standard security protocol is already guaranteed.

Oh yes, connect any of the Samsung TVs with your smartphone, and you can use it as a remote control with Smart Connect. There’s no need to look for the remote if it’s gone missing somehow — each one of your household has a grip on the remote with your own smartphones whenever you want to watch or play something on the TV. You can use your phone as a gamepad too, to play games on it.

One last thing — Samsung devices are also equipped with Samsung Dex. This application allows Samsung devices to seamlessly connect and cast the screen on one device to another. So if working from your tablet can be an eye-straining pain, you can cast it on the smart TV to have a bigger display and larger controls.

Which One Should You Pick?

Three product lineups by Samsung (screenshot credit: Samsung).

It all depends on your wants and budget. The Samsung NEO QLED 8K is obviously the most expensive, with the biggest resolution on display with niche features. If you’re an all-rounder, the Samsung NEO QLED is a good choice, retaining features from the 8K variant. But, if you prefer a standard smart TV, the Samsung OLED is definitely the best choice for you.

Regardless, the features offered by the three product lineups are definitely rich and worthwhile. Feel free to leave your thoughts and comments; there are some other articles you can check out too. See you next time!

  26. Good post right here. One thing I’d like to say is always that most professional job areas consider the Bachelor Degree just as the entry level requirement for an online education. When Associate Degrees are a great way to get started, completing the Bachelors starts up many doors to various employment opportunities, there are numerous online Bachelor Course Programs available from institutions like The University of Phoenix, Intercontinental University Online and Kaplan. Another issue is that many brick and mortar institutions offer Online variations of their certifications but often for a drastically higher charge than the corporations that specialize in online diploma programs.
