The gaming community’s reaction was lukewarm towards the announcements made during Playstation’s State of Play 2024 until towards the end of the live stream, when they announced Ghost of Yotei, a sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. The game that was developed by team Sucker Punch Productions was a massive success due to the engaging combat mechanics, beautifully immersive world design and excellent story writing.

New Story, New Journey

Despite being a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, this game will no longer follow the previous protagonist, Jin Sakai, for the new journey. Instead, we are introduced to a totally new female protagonist, Atsu. The timeline for the sequel is set far further from the prequel, which is around the Tokugawa period, also known as the Edo period, set in the 1600s. Ghost of Tsushima was set to be around the 1200s, during the Mongol’s first invasion of Japan.

Weapons

The trailer also reveals more weapon types including a matchlock gun. It is not out of theme as Japan already explored the use of gunpowder in weapons during the timeline. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see how the combat in the game improves from its predecessor as the variety of new weapons will definitely enable players to be more creative with the combat mechanics.

Statement from the Developer

As for from which angle the game takes for that period, it still remains a question as there are no official disclosures made by Sucker Punch Productions yet. The developer also made a statement as to why they no longer continue the story of Jin Sakai, as according to them:

“We also wanted to continue to innovate. To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead. At Sucker Punch, we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”
